DHL Stormers forward Hendre Stassen talks business, recovery from injury and the start of his coaching journey.

You have recently started training with the team again. How has the injury rehab been?

The injury rehab has been a challenging journey, causing me to miss alot of the most important Vodacom URC games. Despite the setback, I have been working very hard with the Strength & Conditioning team to ensure a strong comeback.

You have your own company. Can you explain what it is all about and what you do?

Prior to returning to rugby, we established a business to secure a post-rugby plan. The Recovery Hub offers a range of services such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care, Dieticians, and sports massage therapists all under one roof. Our future plans include integrating a general practitioner, and expanding our presence across South Africa.

How have you settled into living in Cape Town? Do you have any favourite spots?

While juggling work on my off days, I’ve been soaking up the Cape Town lifestyle. When I get some downtime, you’ll find me visiting some of the awesome wine farms – Ernie Els definitely stood out. A Roadtrip to the west coast is also a favourite!

You have been helping out with coaching the DHL WP U21 forwards. How has that experience been, and have you learned anything from it?

Assisting with coaching the DHL WP U21 forwards has been a rewarding experience. It provides an opportunity to enhance players’ skills and decision-making both on and off the field. Notably, focusing on line-outs has been a stand-out aspect. Our success so far this season has also deepened my understanding of the DHL Stormers’ game plan and coaching strategies.

What has been the biggest surprise for you about the DHL Stormers set-up since joining the squad?

The most surprising thing for me about being part of the DHL Stormers is how everyone here feels like they belong. It’s a fun group of players and management, but when it’s game-time, we’re all business. After a win, we celebrate together, and then it’s back to work on what we need to improve.
