DHL Stormers seeking clinical edge

PUBLISHED: April 24, 2016

DHL Stormers Head Coach Robbie Fleck wants to see his team make better use of the opportunities that they are creating.

DHL Stormers Head Coach Robbie Fleck wants to see his team make better use of the opportunities that they are creating.

While satisified with his team’s 40-22 victory against the Reds at DHL Newlands, which was their sixth win from eight Vodacom Super Rugby games this season, Fleck believes they could have been more clinical.

Fleck explained that he is encouraged by the fact that his team scored four tries on the day, and could have scored a few more if their finishing had been a bit better.

“The good thing is that we are creating opportunities, we are getting more linebreaks and half-busts than we ever had before, so we are on the right track and the next step is to get that finishing.

“We have got to improve, and the finishing is key, I guess that is the next step – we need to get our support in place and get the pass away because we are getting the opportunities but now we need to go one step further.

“The good thing is that the players are starting to become comfortable, and we are starting to make those moments of magic. If we can convert half of our linebreaks into points, then we are becoming a good team,” he said.

After what had been a challenging week without the services of co-captains Juan de Jongh and Frans Malherbe, Fleck was encouraged by the fact that his team managed to get back to winning ways having lost against the Emirates Lions in Johannesburg the week before.

“We lost both of our leaders this week, so it has certainly been a challenging week for everybody, but we still pulled the win out at the end of the day.

“One thing about our group is that we take on challenges positively and we don’t hang around and think about injuries or leaders missing, we just get on with the job, so credit to them,” he said.

However, the DHL Stormers would like to see more consistency from his side going forward, starting with the clash against the Waratahs at DHL Newlands on Saturday.

“There were momemnts of some really good rugby, and then some soft moments. It is just that consistency that we want.

“Everyone is very keen to get in on Monday, we are facing a quality outfit in the Waratahs and there are a few areas from this game that we will work on and improve on,” he added.
