DHL Stormers 67 minutes for Mandela at Children’s Hospital

PUBLISHED: July 23, 2016

The DHL Stormers visited the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital on Thursday to give their 67 minutes for Mandela.

The DHL Stormers visited the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital on Thursday to give their 67 minutes for Mandela.

As part of the Mandela Week initiative in memory of the iconic former statesman in the week of his birthday, the DHL Stormers visited the hospital in Rondebosch following their training session at DHL Newlands as they prepare for the Vodcam Super Rugby quarterfinal against the Chiefs on Saturday.

The players were taken for a tour of the facilities and then divided into groups that made visits to five different wards to interact with the children and hand out goodie bags.

The wards they visited were for Burns, Surgery, Cardiac and Tracheostomies and Renal and Specialised Medical care.

Communications Officer for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Angelique Jordaan said that having the DHL Stormers visit meant a lot to the children.

“I would really like to thank the team for taking time out of their busy schedules to spend some time with our patients. Spending time in hospital can be really tough, but visits such as this inspire hope, create memories that last a lifetime and make the patients’ stay in hospital more bearable by taking their mind off of what they are going through, even if just for a while.

“It was a visit that won’t be forgotten soon – it was not just the children that couldn’t contain their excitement at meeting and spending time with their sporting heroes, but staff members and parents as well,” she said.
