Champion quality at DHL Newlands

Kenyan marathon world record holder Wilson Kipsang was an interested onlooker at DHL Newlands on Saturday, as the DHL Stormers beat the Lions by 18-3 in Super Rugby action.

Kipsang, the world record holder over 42,2 kilometres and the recent winner of the 2014 London Marathon, was in Cape Town over the weekend as an ambassador for the Two Oceans Marathon – courtesy of DHL Stormers technical sponsors, adidas.

And after cheering on the many, many runners in the half and ultra marathons during the morning and early afternoon, Kipsang then attended his first-ever Super Rugby match and watched the DHL Stormers bounce back to winning ways from adidas’ private suite.

Kipsang had a changeroom tour before kick-off and he also met a clearly star-struck Jacques Nienaber (the DHL Stormers defence analyst) shortly before the game started. Nienaber had earlier run the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon.

At just 62 kilograms, it was easy to tell the difference between Kipsang and the DHL Stormers forwards on the day, but the friendly Kenyan ace told www.iamastormer.com afterwards: “It was a great experience to be here and I wish the team all the best for the remainder of the season.”
