Burger blow for Investec Stormers

PUBLISHED: April 14, 2004

Investec Stormers coach Gert Smal on Wednesday announced a side comprising several changes to the one that beat the Reds on Saturday for this Friday’s Super 12 match against the Blues.

The Stormers will be without in-form Springbok flank Schalk Burger, who had to withdraw from the clash in Auckland due to a groin injury.

“Schalk has a groin injury that he sustained on Monday,” said the coach, who brought in Hendrik Gerber at flank, with another Springbok, Pierre Uys, moving to the substitutes’ bench.

Springbok Werner Greeff was declared fit after missing several games and he will take the place of Gaffie du Toit at fullback. Du Toit moves to flyhalf in place of Chris Rossouw.

Free State speedster Tonderai Chavanga gets a run in place of Breyton Paulse, who will sit this one out. Gus Theron replaces Pieter Rossouw at left wing. The lanky Rossouw is in Cape Town, where his wife gave birth to their second child this week.

Neil de Kock gets another start at scrumhalf in place of Bolla Conradie, while Eddie Andrews is also back in the starting lineup at tighthead prop in place of Pat Barnard.

The expected return to the match squad of Selborne Boome, however, did not materialise. Boome, who had knee surgery, was not included on the bench and is due for a return next week.
